How a Lightning round runs

Sub-three-second answers. The whole game's over before someone orders another round.

01

Load buzzer questions

Short, fast, definitive answers. Trivia where there's no debate. Geography, history dates, sports records. The library has 800+ flagged Lightning-ready.

02

Run the countdown

Question on the projector, 5 seconds on the clock, BUZZER ENABLED on every phone in the room. The race starts at "go."

03

Players race to buzz

Tap the screen. The server records your timestamp to the millisecond. First in gets the green light, the rest see their place in line.

04

Speed becomes score

Correct + fast = max points. Correct + slow = some points. Wrong = next team gets a shot. Streak bonuses stack if you keep answering first.

What makes it shine

Phones become buzzers, with haptic feedback

Players already joined via QR. The Lightning round changes their screen into a giant red button that vibrates in their hand when they slam it. Press feels like a press. Win feels like a win. Zero app, zero friction. Toggle off for silent rooms.

Millisecond precision timing

The race resolves on the server in Redis, not in the browser. Two teams 30ms apart? The server knows who tapped first. No "I buzzed first!" arguments.

Response-time scoring

Score formula is roughly 100 minus (response_ms divided by a divisor). A 400ms answer is worth way more than a 1.8s one. Reflex matters.

Streak multipliers

Three correct in a row, your next answer pays double. The streak ends, the multiplier resets. Hot tables stay hot.

Single-buzzer or parallel modes

Race-style: only the first buzzer gets to answer. Parallel: every team submits, fastest correct wins. Pick the rhythm that fits the room.

Final-round bonus multiplier

Last Lightning round of the night doubles every point. Comebacks become possible at literally the last second.

Timer that pulses warning, then danger

Neutral while you've got time. Amber pulse at 10 seconds. Red pulse, faster, at 3. Every screen in the room is on the same clock. The urgency is felt, not counted.

Where Lightning lights it up
