The regulars at The Local

Brainy brought friends.

Brainy McFlood is the Brainflood brain, come to life. The Local is his bar, and every bar has its regulars. Here they are: who they are, what they say, and which game nights they never miss.

Brainy McFlood, a cartoon pink brain in rain boots, waving

The quizmaster's sidekick McFlood family

Brainy McFlood

The Brainflood brain, come to life. Brainy is the regular at the end of the bar who knows the answer, is delighted that you know it too, and never makes anyone feel slow. He wades through the flood in his rain boots, which is the McFlood half of his name. He cheers for the table, not against it.

  • Who's ready for a question?
  • Nice one. I had that too.
  • Last call for answers!
Gus the Gut, a cartoon stomach with a big grin and a rumbling belly

Brainy's best friend

Gus the Gut

Brainy thinks it through. Gus goes with his gut, because he IS one. He answers every question instantly, loudly and with total confidence, and he is usually wrong. When Gus is sure, his stomach rumbles, and it rumbles all night. Then once a night he blurts out something impossible and it is right, and nobody can explain it, least of all Gus. Always hungry, always happy, always on Brainy's team.

  • Trust me. I can feel it.
  • My gut says C. My gut always says C.
  • I knew that! Wait. Did I?

Thumper, a cartoon heart with a rockabilly quiff, singing into a microphone

The karaoke crooner

Thumper

A heart with a rockabilly quiff (those are his arteries, and he is very proud of them). Thumper signs up for every karaoke slot, sings nothing but power ballads, and cries at all of them, including the ones other people sing. He cheers louder than anyone in the room. Feelings first, lyrics second.

  • This next one goes out to everyone.
  • I'm not crying. You're crying.
  • One more song. Just one.

Al Manac, a heavy old reference book in a denim cover, with half-moon glasses and a mustache

The stickler at the next table

Al Manac

A heavy old reference book in a denim cover, with half-moon spectacles and a mustache that has opinions. Al has read everything and will tell you so. He disputes answers, quotes the rules, and points out that it is technically a fruit. He is almost always right, which is the most annoying thing about him. Secretly delighted whenever someone learns something.

  • Actually...
  • I believe you will find the rules say otherwise.
  • Technically, that is a fruit.

Keg McGillicuddy, an oak barrel with copper hoops, aviator shades, a huge mustache and a pint

Owns The Local

Keg McGillicuddy

An oak barrel with copper hoops, amber aviators and a mustache you could sweep the bar with. Keg runs The Local the way a head coach runs a team: loud, gruff, all tough love, and secretly the biggest softie in the building. Never seen without a pint in one hand and a bar towel in the other. He has a tap he would rather you did not mention.

  • Pint's not going to drink itself.
  • You lose, you buy the round. Them's the rules.
  • Phones at the table? That's a penalty.

Eddie Sun, a lightbulb in sunglasses, glowing like the sun

The rival captain

Eddie Sun

Captain of the team from the bar across the street and the reigning champion, as he will remind you. A lightbulb who is fairly sure he is the sun. He wears shades indoors because he is too bright for his own good, and he always has the bright idea first. Brainy's friendly rival: they argue about everything and would never miss each other's quiz nights.

  • Bright idea: try to keep up.
  • Shades stay on. It's for your safety.
  • Good game. Rematch next week?

Phoney, a shifty smartphone with a cracked screen

The cheat (the villain)

Phoney

A shifty little smartphone with a cracked screen and one unread notification he will never clear. Phoney's whole plan, every week, is to look up the answers under the table. It never works. The host always catches him, and he is always very surprised. The cartoon villain every quiz night needs.

  • Nobody look under the table.
  • I was just checking the time.
  • Curses! Caught again!

Puddles, a yellow rubber duck

Brainy's pet

Puddles

A rubber duck who lives in Brainy's puddle and goes everywhere he goes. Says nothing but a small squeak. Gets more applause than anyone else in the bar.

  • Squeak.

  • SQUEAK!

Grampy McFlood, Brainy's grandfather, with a long grey beard and a walking stick that lights up

The family sage McFlood family

Grampy McFlood

Brainy's grandfather, the oldest and wisest McFlood, with the most wrinkles in the family and a beard down to his boots. Grampy has forgotten more trivia than most people will ever know, and he still remembers the rest. He speaks rarely, slowly and correctly. The bulb on his walking stick lights up when he has a bright idea, which is always. Wears the family rain boots, of course.

  • Patience. The answer comes to those who wait.
  • Ah. I was there when that happened.
  • Hmm. Yes. It is Belgium.

Miguel McFlood, Brainy's tiny cousin in a sombrero bigger than he is

Brainy's little cousin from Mexico McFlood family

Miguel McFlood

The smallest McFlood, visiting from Guadalajara, and the quickest on the buzzer in the whole family. His sombrero is bigger than he is, and he is very proud of it: it was his abuelo's. Everyone underestimates Miguel exactly once. He keeps everything under that hat: snacks, spare pencils and, somehow, the right answer. He wears the family rain boots, and on the wettest nights the brim keeps the whole table dry.

  • ยกร“rale! I know this one.
  • Small McFlood, fast buzzer.
  • Next question, por favor.
